Short+Sweet Theatre Dubai 2017 | Top 40 – Week 1

Short+Sweet Dubai is Dubai’s biggest and best short play festival and brings together Dubai’s top theatre groups – Aish Outt Productions, Backstage, Danu, Dubai Drama Group, Natakwale, Orb Theatricals, Theatrewallas, Theatrics and Third Half Theatre. In addition many local schools and universities participate in the festival including The American School of Dubai, The American University of Dubai, Heriot-Watt University, Wollongong University, Emirates Aviation College and Maplewood International School. Held annually every January to March since 2012 the festival includes something for everyone – comedy, drama, romance and thrillers – and all in just 10 minutes. Plays presented in the festival include the best 10-minute plays from around the world as well as scripts by some of Dubai’s top playwrights, brought to life by Dubai’s top actors, directors and theatre companies.

1. Smile for the Camera

After a long hard day at work, four miners decide to go drinking at an old bar suggested by their young new colleague. Watch out what happens when this tough lot loosens up to smile for the camera.

2. Killing Bambi

Writer: Loris Siekman (USA)  Director: Aaqeel Shariff   ITC: Aish Outt Productions

Cast: Rohit Menon (Tom) Marija Gregoric (Beth)

Beth hates to drive Tom around and to add to her woes, Bambi comes along to spoil the party….. good lord…is he in trouble?

3. The Renaissance

Cast: Advait, Aishwarya, Anvay, Aryan, Atharva, Dhruv, Ishaan, Saie, Srushti, Vedant, Yash

If people are trying to bully you and bring you down, you can either fight back or win them over with your kindness and helpfulness. The story of a 14 yr old boy who overcomes his problems and emerges victorious.

4. Auction

Cast: Marie Dullaghan (Anna), Frank Dullaghan (Auctioneer)

Learn Anna’s story through the things she is selling today.

5. Murder by Midnight

Writer: Jeff Goode (USA) Directors: Aida Laubach and Lisa Harter   ITC: ASD Adult Theatre

Cast: Kristopher Williams (Dick Piston, hotel detective), Nadine Kabbani (Woman), Mark Schmidt (Bellhop)

Hotel detective Dick Piston has less than ten minutes to solve the brutal murder of a regular hotel guest or risk losing her case to the day shift. A ten-minute mystery.

6. Her 70th Birthday

Cast: Kuv Sharma (Tommy), Hiba Khan (Melanie), George Ansatasiades (Ryan), Justin Cipriano (Alan), Ruth Badley (Aunt B)

It’s her 70th birthday, a time to celebrate her life with family and friends. Or is it? A story full of family drama, long lasting feuds and revelations. 

7. Checkmate

Cast: Karl Lewisham (Robert), Adam Hackney (Sergei)

Two Chess players face off for one final contest. They’ve played this game many times before, but this time the stakes are higher than they can possibly imagine.

8. The Flowers

Sam is a walking disaster – for others. But there is something that doesn’t get affected by her cursed presence. Will this change the course of her life or is she doomed to be unbreakable but alone?

10. The Detective

A woman suspects her husband’s suicide is actually a murder.  Without help from the police, she decides to hire two private detectives who have an unique way of solving crimes.
